On behalf of Cadillac, the official vehicle of the Toronto International Film Festival, I’m thrilled to be covering all things TIFF again for another year in a unique social media reporting assignment. With my insider reporting partner Skye Collyer, in our beautiful Cadillac CTS-V coupe we’ll ride to some of the best of what TIFF has to offer – the press conferences, red carpet premieres, and parties that take over downtown Toronto.

I hope you’ll join us Festival Insiders as we ride through TIFF this year. You will have a few ways to keep up with us during TIFF:

– The Festivalinsider.ca blog where I post stories each day about the red carpet premieres and events we visit.

– Cadillac Festival Insider features the photography of George Pimentel – a TIFF renowned celebrity photography with his own unique access. Photo albums are published daily throughout the Festival on Facebook and Flickr.

– I’ll tweet a lot on our popular Twitter feed at @FESTIVALinsider about all the TIFF action.

– We produce a daily series of YouTube videos hosted by my co-insider SKYE as we visit the hot spots around the Toronto International Film Festival.

– And if that wasn’t enough, I’ll somehow find the strength to get up at 7am each day during TIFF to chat with Mad Dog on 99.9 Virgin radio where I’ll dish all things TIFF.

– We’ll even giveaway a few TIFF premiere tickets, so for that reason alone, it’s worth following along.

A special week in late June when two of the most distinctive voices in soul history made separate, but equally important appearances in Toronto. Ms. Aretha Franklin and Sade made rare concert stops in the city. Online music news site Manifesto.ca asked to use photos I shot at the shows. Was thrilled to see my shots end up in beautifully penned reviews (coincidentally, by a friend) – Mindbender Supreme.

On Aretha Franklin’s show kicking off the 2011 Toronto Jazz Festival;
“It was truly something reminiscent of the arrival of royalty: it was like the musicians had to lay a bed of sonic rose petals, orchids and chrysanthemums down before the Queen would even set foot down in the court of the crowd and concert. Honestly, for any other artist, it would have been a tedious display of pretentiousness. But on this occasion, it actually felt proper.” – SEE MORE.

On the magical Sade show at Air Canada Centre;
“Sade. Ooh, let me say it again, just because it’s so sensual: SADE. Her name alone is nothing short of holy in many music lovers’ hearts. She eternally floats in the pantheon of immortal soul vocalists, artists that create above and beyond the confines of time, space, and the plastic parameters of the music industry.” – SEE MORE.

Funk was in the house on Saturday night at the Toronto Jazz Festival. The bass legend that is Bootsy Collins made a long awaited concert stop in the city. Bootsy rose to prominence with James Brown in the sixties, and then Parliament-Funkadelic in the seventies. Bootsy’s work is credited with being a driving influential force in the whole G-Funk era behind Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. So it was time to grab the camera and Let Me Ride. (all photos Richard Budman.)
A few different looks for Bootsy during the evening.
Bootsy had a tight backing band on the evening.
Also a Parliament-Funkadelic original, it was great to see that Bootsy had Bernie Worrell on his 2011 tour. Worrell’s synthesizer and keyboards backed many of the Parliament albums in the seventies.
When Bootsy decided to venture into the audience and greet almost EVERY SINGLE MEMBER with a hug or handshake – it made it a special concert for me. Very happy to have had on camera the 35mm f1:8 Nikon prime lenses at the time – great for low light.

I do love my British soul ladies. Nobody’s hotter than Adele right now, and Joss Stone is a very young veteran singing today. But the biggest selling Brit-Soul singer of them all (100 million records sold and counting) – is Sade Adu and she made a rare stop in Toronto this week at Air Canada Centre. It’s Sade’s first concert tour in a decade and no way I was missing it.

Sade has always been one of those artists that fascinates me. She is considered reclusive and very rarely gives press interviews. Sade quickly released four multi-platinum albums during the eighties – then almost as quick, she practically disappeared from public view and has released just two more records during the last twenty years.

The wait was worth it as Sade gave a mesmerizing two-hour performance with her very tight band. Sade started the evening in stiletto heels but my mid-performance to the end, it was bare feet.

I just had my point-and-shoot camera so it was fun again to challenge myself to try and get the best shot possible (all photos Richard Budman.)

Before I made my moves to side-stage for closer shots. I started the night in seats directly at the other end of the arena. Hadn’t sat in these seats before, and in the short time I was in them they provided me with a unique perspective on the audience – being directly behind them. In further proof we’re living in a digital culture that if we don’t personally record an event – it didn’t happen. I noticed hundreds of little white lights throughout the entire audience. I actually first thought it might be some type of lighting effect. Then I realized – it was the glow of mobile screens and small digital cameras.

After an amazing opening night Aretha Franklin gave The Toronto Jazz Festival on Friday, I returned Sunday to the main stage tent for The Spanish Harlem Orchestra – a Grammy award winning latin dance music band that I figured would be a fun show under the main stage tent (and it was.)

I was quickly reminded of something when pulling out the camera – it’s far more challenging finding good picture composition for a thirteen piece band, than when shooting solo artists. In the case of the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, I discovered being very close to the stage (the usual hotspot for capturing artists best) would not prove to be the ideal shooting location on this evening.

I started side-stage left. But having the band leader’s back to me (on piano) just wasn’t working.

When moving to first-row, centre stage – it took about a second for me to realize I just wouldn’t be able to capture a full band shot. You might have gotten something cool if you were shooting with a 10mm fish-eye lens, but I had nothing wider than my 35mm Nikon prime – no way I would get a full-band shot from this spot.

Spent a few minutes catching some close up stuff while I was in the front-row, but was anxious to move onto a better shooting spot.

We next tried side stage-right, almost behind the band. An interesting spot. But I still wasn’t completely satisfied.

When I got to centre stage, from the back of the main tent, I could start to feel we were getting closer to right spot to capture the band.

BINGO! Centre stage, about ten rows back felt like the right spot to capture the full band. Sometimes it’s too packed in shows to afford the luxury of moving around like I did for the Spanish Harlem Orchestra tonight. But the lesson on the night for me is if the shots aren’t feeling right and you’re not happy with the composition – move around in the venue and find other shooting spots.

Got a invite from Windows Canada to a cool Saturday night NXNE Music Fest show. Windows was sponsoring the night that featured a headlining performance from Shad – a truly awesome and under-appreciated Canadian MC. I loved Shad the last time I saw him perform, at an outside Juno Fan Fest back in March, and that was a great show in what felt one of Toronto’s coldest nights of the year.

So when the chance came to see Shad in a much more intimate (and warmer!) venue, I was all over it. Since it was more a night out with friends – I didn’t take the shootin’ that seriously and just came armed with my camera over my shoulder and one lens – my 35mm prime f1:8 – also great in low light which these club shows tend to be usually be in.

What to do on a Friday night in Toronto? Heading down to Roy Thomson Hall seemed like the good bet to me as a politico legend and diplomat, Henry Kissinger was taking part in the Munk Debates, and just outside the Hall – the Luminato Festival was in full swing and KD Lang was set to take the stage for a performance.

Former Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff greets Kissinger with one hand, while balancing a few drinks in the other.

Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and Henry Kissinger chatted with each other like long lost friends.

“Does the 21st Century Belong to China?” Munk Debate featured Niall Ferguson, Henry Kissinger, Fareed Zakaria, Peter Munk, and David Daokui Li.

When Kissinger speaks – everybody listens.

There were a few people on the hunt to get Kissinger’s books personally signed.

At the same time as the Munk Debates, right outside Roy Thomson Hall in Metro Square the Luminato Festival was taking place. I managed to catch the awesome KD Lang taking the stage and joined the large crowd in enjoying her set.

The founding member and chief songwriter of The Beach Boys – Brian Wilson made a rare appearance during Toronto’s NXNE music festival. Wilson, who has a long history of reclusive, and sometimes erratic behavior graciously accepted the award, said a few words, and exited the stage at Toronto’s Hyatt Regency hotel in about a minute. I think it was the shortest acceptance speech in this city’s history (all photos Richard Budman / June 16, 2011)

You can’t get many better assignments then how I spent the recent Victoria Day long holiday weekend. It was at Mosport Raceway just east of Toronto. The Cadillac Racing team has made a triumphant return to the Pirelli World Challenge series this year and it was their first time back racing in Canada in a long time. GM Canada was inviting Cadillac owners to a special track-side VIP hospitality tent to enjoy the festivities for the weekend. I was there to cover the scene for Cadillac and Chevrolet online properties.

Cadillac Racing driver Johnny O’Connell had a great weekend returning the #3 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe to a 2nd place finish. It was Cadillac’s first podium in three years.

GM North American President Mark Reuss made the drive from Detroit for race weekend. I captured him here congratulating Cadillac driver Johnny O’Connell after his 2nd place finish.

One of my favorite shots from the weekend. Just thought these suited up Cadillac fuel dudes looked very cool doing their jobs.

“Gentlemen, start your engines.”

The Cadillac CTS-V’s starting 3-4 on the grid.

Cadillac Racing driver Johnny O’Connell.

I still couldn’t ignore the Chevrolet Corvette’s competing in the series (the vette’s would actually end up having a better weekend then the Cadillacs.) While I flirted with the idea of renting a longer lens for the weekend, I ended up just seeing what I could get with my lovely and fast Sigma 50-150mm and hunt for a few shooting positions at Mosport that allow you to get quite close to the track (you just want to make sure you have earplugs.) I shot the first day with the shutter a little too high and froze the car action too much. By Sunday, I had dialed the shutter back to 320 – giving the track shots much better wheel spin – and I was very pleased with the results.

It was VIP hospitality all the way for Cadillac owners (and this photographer.) Not only were they treated to some fine foods and a track-side seat from GM, they got to take their own cars around the track in a Cadillac parade lap.

What’s there to do on an Easter Sunday afternoon? Actually, not much.

I’d been catching up with office work and doing those pesky taxes when by 4pm realized I hadn’t been outside all day, it was time for some fresh air. Noticed lots of Sikhs flowing into Queen’s Park. A quick google told me it was Toronto’s annual Khalsa Day celebrations and when noticing a ton of media – I figured somebody famous must be here (and now, maybe a picture moment or two.)

Another photographer alerted me that both Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff and NDP leader Jack Layton were both set to arrive and address the crowd. Since we are just over a week from a Federal Election here in Canada – both these guys are pretty big in the news right now (all photos Richard Budman.)

It was time to get the camera out. Decided to use my wide angle lens because I had a hunch there would be some tight press scrums around the party leaders and I would need to get in close for a clean shot.

Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff & MP Ruby Dhalla just before they take the stage to address the thousands of Sikhs that had gathered at Queen’s Park.

It was strictly shoes off on the Khalsa Day stage.

What’s this man thinking? If his party doesn’t perform well this election – many will second guess if Ignatieff is the right man to lead the Liberal Party.

I followed Ignatieff’s exit from Queen’s Park. I enjoy very candid moments with political leaders and their security. The Liberal leader would chat with and take questions from anyone approaching him.

I then went to look for NDP leader Jack Layton. There seemed to be a bit more buzz and media attention around Layton I could almost feel. Took me a few minutes to penetrate the circle of media around him, but when finally finding a hole got some nice picture moments.

The “shot” the media was looking for was whether the two party leaders would greet each other. I overheard people with Ignatieff say it wouldn’t happen. But when the Liberal leader exited the stage he would have to cross paths with Layton. It was very fast and Ignatieff gave Layton just a quick handshake and, “hello Jack.” It was very crowded and super fast so not sure if any media got a good shot of it. (mine sucks I think.)

Think they were protesting something.

Of course Charlie Sheen’s appearance at Toronto’s Massey Hall was on my mind today. Sheen had become a media sensation since he was effectively fired from his hit sitcom, Two and a Half Men.

But I was still doing office work past six on the eve of Sheen’s first appearance in Canada on his Violent Torpedo of Truth tour and I didn’t think I could get to Massey Hall’s stage doors in time for Sheen’s arrival for what I knew would be a mob scene of media and fans.

But when Twitter was telling me Sheen still probably hadn’t arrived to the Toronto venue by 7 pm and the crowd awaiting his arrival had grown quite large, it was time to check out the Massey Hall scene (all photos Richard Budman.)

I’ve covered my fair share of artist arrivals (and exits) at Massey Hall and by far, this was the most anticipated I have ever seen by fans and media.

Lots of mainstream press were playing the paparazzi street game awaiting Sheen’s arrival to Massey Hall. (I post this flattering pic of a certain CTV entertainment reporter (who’s name I can’t recall or bother to look up now) but clearly remember she being rude and dismissive to my colleague while covering the Juno Awards.

Most artists performing at Massey Hall usually enter at the east side marked stage doors (where I was hanging with the rest of the big crowd.) But they decided to bring Sheen in by way of the seldom used west entrance doors. It was a chaotic scene to say the least!

Thankfully, Charlie was cool and spent a few minutes greeting the fans and media that managed to make it over to the west doors. For me, it gave just enough time where I still managed to make some aggressive moves and find a pretty good shooting position.
