Spent a great week in July out in western Canada for the world famous Calgary Stampede in a social media reporting assignment. GMC is a proud vehicle sponsor of the Stampede and does some engaging marketing on-site during Stampede week. The event’s signature event, the chuckwagon races, is titled the GMC Rangeland Derby.

Despite some rainy weather mid-week the Calgary Stampede enjoyed one of it’s busiest years ever. I was thrilled to shoot “The Greatest Outdoor Show On Earth” (in good weather and bad!) Being up-close to the rodeo and chuckwagon racing action proved far more exciting to photograph than I ever would have thought. BLOG: Awesome Holiday weekend spent at Mosport Raceway shooting the Cadillac Racing team

You can’t get many better assignments then how I spent the recent Victoria Day long holiday weekend. It was at Mosport Raceway just east of Toronto. The Cadillac Racing team has made a triumphant return to the Pirelli World Challenge series this year and it was their first time back racing in Canada in a long time. GM Canada was inviting Cadillac owners to a special track-side VIP hospitality tent to enjoy the festivities for the weekend. I was there to cover the scene for Cadillac and Chevrolet online properties.

Cadillac Racing driver Johnny O’Connell had a great weekend returning the #3 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe to a 2nd place finish. It was Cadillac’s first podium in three years.
GM North American President Mark Reuss made the drive from Detroit for race weekend. I captured him here congratulating Cadillac driver Johnny O’Connell after his 2nd place finish.
One of my favorite shots from the weekend. Just thought these suited up Cadillac fuel dudes looked very cool doing their jobs.

I still couldn’t ignore the Chevrolet Corvette’s competing in the series (the vette’s would actually end up having a better weekend then the Cadillacs.) While I flirted with the idea of renting a longer lens for the weekend, I ended up just seeing what I could get with my lovely and fast Sigma 50-150mm and hunt for a few shooting positions at Mosport that allow you to get quite close to the track (you just want to make sure you have earplugs.) I shot the first day with the shutter a little too high and froze the car action too much. By Sunday, I had dialed the shutter back to 320 – giving the track shots much better wheel spin – and I was very pleased with the results.

It was VIP hospitality all the way for Cadillac owners (and this photographer.) Not only were they treated to some fine foods and a track-side seat from GM, they got to take their own cars around the track in a Cadillac parade lap.
