Lauryn Hill returned to the Budweiser stage with NAS on September 10th, 2017. The last time I saw Ms. Lauryn on this stage (formally the Molson Amphitheatre) it was almost twenty years ago and she was touring in support of her landmark record, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
Knowing Lauryn’s unique concert history the last few years – I checked my expectations at the door. I’m glad I did because I was a little disappointed in her show. Ms. Hill’s voice is still very strong from the the opener “Everything is Everything” all the way through “Killing me Softly.”
But even though I was front row for most of the show – Ms. Lauryn managed to keep her distance.

But Lauryn just never seemed to get comfortable and kept her heavy jacket, toque, and dark glasses on through the entire show.
I can’t say that Ms. Lauryn didn’t show up to play. Her voice was on-point and the backing band fantastic. I came to realize she just doesn’t want to be photographed on stage anymore. Lauryn knows everyone has a mobile out now.
Lauryn returned at the end of the show alongside tour partner NAS for their signature song, “If I Ruled the World.”
Legendary rapper NAS worked his way through his catalog of hits.
