(May 13, 2010) Is it ever OK for a Toronto Maple Leafs fan to cheer for the Montreal Canadiens? Does a hockey rivalry still even exist between the two cities? It’s a question being debated as the Canadiens continue their improbable quest for the Stanley Cup after knocking off the 2 top teams in the N.H.L. playoffs. But Toronto fans are cheering – and LOUDLY, in their homes and sports bars all across the GTA. But it’s not without some criticism. Some feel the rivalry is too ingrained in history for Toronto people to cheer their “arch rival” Montreal. But some also wonder, “what rivalry?” The two teams haven’t faced each other in the playoffs in more than thirty years. Either way, there was some very LOUD cheering in Toronto sports bars tonight as the Canadiens did the near impossible and defeated the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins.
